A year after his death, a plaque has been unveiled in memory of the trojan and selfless work carried out by a proud Lifford man.

Life-long Lifford resident Donal MacLochlainn was honoured by the board of Habinteg Housing Association (Ireland) for his commitment to his local town.

The short yet poignant ceremony in St Columba’s Grove, Ballyduff Park, was attended by his wife Rita and daughter Suzanne, friends and relations, along with residents of Ballyduff Park, staff and board members of Habinteg Housing Association Ireland.

Rita unveiled a memorial plaque to Donal and dedicated one of the meeting rooms in St Columba’s Grove in his memory.

Speaking at the ceremony Dr Paul Armstrong, Chairman of Habinteg Housing and co-founder of the development, spoke of Donal’s initiative and wise counsel through the planning and development stages and in ongoing management.

Donal had been associated with many Lifford developments over the years.

He was particularly proud of the success of the Habinteg Housing project in the centre of the town. He was a founder member and Treasurer of the voluntary association for 11 years.

Comprising 53 houses, bungalows and apartments, and managed by a small staff and warden the housing charity is overseen by a board of directors based locally. Supported by Donegal County Council it has won several prizes for design and for the provision of an integrated neighbourhood.

The board of Habinteg Housing are currently working on plans to develop further projects in the county.

The wording on the memorial to Donal reads “This room is dedicated to the memory of Donal MacLochlainn (1934-2012).

“A lifelong resident of this town and founding member and treasurer of this housing charity from 2001-2012, his invaluable guidance and advice helped make this development possible.

“Erected by the board of Habinteg Housing Association Ireland December 2013.”
