DONEGAL university students are on their way to New York tonight – as part of the Jailbreak 2014 charity challenge.

Daire Mc Mullin from Stranorlar, a student in Trinity College Dublin and pal Paul McDonagh-Forde are among 100 students who have 36 hours to travel as far away from Dublin as possible without spending a single cent!

A short-time ago Daire revealed they are in London – and about to board a flight to New York!

“We’ve just secured flights to New York, thanks to Digital Fone Communications Buncrana and Filan’s Centra,” said Daire.

“We’re at Gatwick airport, London – next stop JFK! That’s 5,129km.”

They are required to beg, borrow or blag their travel costs, regardless of the destination.

It’s a charity based initiative and all funds raised are given to the students’ designated charities with the Donegal lads giving money to St Vincent de Paul and Amnesty International.

Last year two students made it all the way to Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Daire and Paul left Kilmainham Jail today with the rest of the teams – and have until 9pm Sunday to get as far away from Dublin as possible.

Other teams were tonight in Paris, Amsterdam, Istanbul, Krakow and Lanzarote
