The Annual LYIT Clubs and Societies Awards evening took place last Thursday in Letterkenny.

Among the awards for presentation were the Most Outstanding Club Member, Leadership Award, Best Society and the Civic, Charity & Community Engagement Award – an award now highly regarded in third level education circles, and awarded in recognition of the club that best displayed their skills in linking with the community.

Club Scholarships were also presented to 7 successful candidates selected from 33 applicants, each of the winners, who lead their clubs and their organisation with distinction, received the award worth €1,400 which will assist in progressing their studies.

Included in the guest list were previous winners of the scholarship categories and members of both the Canoe Club and Gaisce Society, winners of the Best Club category in the past.

In the area of Civic, Charity and Community engagement both Paul Hannigan, President and Patsy McGonagle, Irish Olympic Team Manager and guest speaker on the night, focussed on the growing need for increased levels of engagement in the community.

Patsy McGonagle related to many of his own life experiences being founded on a good community spirit which helped him and many others to develop as leaders.

Paul Hannigan, in addressing the assembled group of students, referred to the many demands of the education system in third level colleges such as LYIT and hoped that the Clubs and Societies programme, which had started many years ago in the institute, would continue to grow in the manner that it has done to date.

This could not have happened without the support of the people behind the scenes, namely the Finance Committee and Registration Committee, Fiona Kelly SU Administrator and Paddy Gallagher, Sports Officer all of whom he congratulated for their efforts.
