Inishowen Sinn Féin councillor Jack Murray has said that the issue of water charges is the primary issue of concern among families in Inishowen. Cllr Murray said that the issue is constantly raised by voters during election canvassing.
Cllr Murray said: “Families in Inishowen are at the end of their tether. Our young people are emigrating in their thousands, unemployment is out of control, we have the lowest disposable income in the state and the government is saddling us with more and more new taxes.
“To date I have canvassed hundreds of homes throughout Inishowen on the election campaign. At almost every door I have been met by people who are worried about the introduction of water charges.
“People are rightly angry that they are paying property taxes but not receiving any services in return. They are now furious that water charges are being introduced as a new way of taking money from struggling people.
“Sinn Féin is opposed to water charges and property taxes. We have clearly demonstrated how revenue can be raised through alternatives measures which would see the super wealthy pay their fair share and give ordinary families a break.
“This message is welcomed on the canvass and I am confident that people will endorse our fairer approach to politics on 23rd May.”
