A total of €705,000 is to be allocated to Donegal for its piers and harbours.

The money will be used to boost marine and leisure tourism and for the ongoing maintenance and development of piers and harbours.

The allocation has been welcomed by Deputy Joe McHugh.

“Donegal piers and harbours are set to receive €516,240 from the Department of Agriculture and the Marine, with Greencastle receiving in total €150,000 under the Harbour Development Scheme and €200,000 under the Marine Leisure and Marine Tourism scheme.

“This funding, for ongoing maintenance and development of piers and harbours, is crucial for ensuring their long term sustainability. This infrastructure is essential to the local fishing industry, which plays such an important role in our communities right across the County and the livelihood of those who work within this area.”

Today’s funding announcement comes on top of a grant in February 2014 where 28 harbours, piers and slipways around Donegal received €751,000 for damage repairs caused during the storms last winter.
