Senior League Division 2 Round 13 Results

Referee: Michael Mulhern

Gaeil Fhánada took on Sean MacCumhaill’s in sunny Portsalon on Sunday the 6th of July at 3pm. Fanad started the first half playing with a slight breeze and begun well with 3 great scores from play from Michael Sweeney Seamie Coshia and Marty McAteer within 6 mins. MacCumhaill’s then got their opening score after 10 minutes, with the teams exchanging points all from frees over the next 10 minutes to leave the score at 5 pts to 3 pts in Fanad’s favour after 20 mins. From there it was all Fanad for the final 10 minutes of the half, with Seami Nanny Friel, Michael Sweeney, Mark Sparkey Friel and Frank Sweeney kicking some great points to leave the half time score at 9 pts to 3 pts in the Gaels favour.

After the break the second half began as the first ended with Fanad playing some good attractive football with scores at the end of most moves. Johnny Nanny Friel and Kevin Bear McElwaine got a point each with a MacCumhaill’s point in between. The first goal of the game came shortly after this when the MacCumhaill’s goalkepper and defender made a mistake with a short kick out which Seamie Nani pounced on, beat his defender and laid it across to Seamie Coshia to fist to the net nicely. To this point Fanad had played some great football and looked comfortable and led 1-11 to 4 pts with 20 mins left. But Fanad then stepped of the gas and MacCumhaill’s came strongly back into the game. MacCumhaill’s kicked 1-9 of the next 1-11 over the next 15 mins with Michael Sweeney’s long range effort and Marty McAteer’s neat finish being Fanad’s only scores in this period, Fanad also lost Seami Nanny to a black card in this period which was a big blow to the team in blue and white. This left the scores level at 1-13 a piece with 5 minutes to go. Ryan McGonigle put Fanad back in the lead but again MacCumhaill’s pulled it level with a great score from there full forward from near the sideline. Fanad again went up the field and took the lead once again through a fine finish by Oisin Shiels following a lovely passing move to put Fanad a point up. But there was a sting in the tail for Fanad in injury time with a long ball into the Fanad 21 metre line falling nicely for the MacCumhaill’s wing forward who was bursting forward and he finished well to the net. This left the score at 2-14 to 1-15, and although Fanad created one last chance of a goal, which the returning Davit Walsh and Michael Sweeney, were unlucky not to finish to the net, it wasn’t enough, and MacCumhaill’s held on for a 2 point win.

Gaeil Fhánada: Mark McConigley, Cathal Martin, Fergal Friel, Frank Sweeney 0:01, Ronan McAteer, Patrick McConigley, Ryan McGonigle 0:01, Kevin McGonigle 0:01, Michael Sweeney 0:03, Jimmy Coyle, Seami Nanny Friel 0:02, Marty McAteer 0:03, Johnny Nanny Friel 0:01, Seimi Coshia Friel 1:01, Mark Friel (C) 0:01, Shaun McGovern, Jerry Friel, Oisin Shiels 0:01 for Seami Nanny (Black Card), Davitt Walsh for Jimmy Coyle, Paul Dougie Coyle, Oisin Blaney, Shaun Coyle.
