GOLF LOGODunfanaghy Golf Club Notes:

Hello Everyone, we had great weather in the latter half of the week and large numbers on the course over the weekend.

We started off with the Mental Health Classic on Friday and following a slow start in the morning there was a good turnout in the evening time.

Well done to Rodger and Bernie for organising a great day out for everyone. The prizes were excellent and the scoring was just as good.

Well done to Michael Murray and his team for successfully defending this competition.

On Saturday we had our Lady President, Julia’s prize. Over 100 golfers took part in the Ladies and Men’s competitions.

It was great to see so many people giving their support to Julia on the day. She has done a lot of work for the club over the years.

Well done to all the staff in the clubhouse who prepared the food and keep things running smoothly throughout the day. Please see the Ladies notes for results of the competition.

Remember our chef, Cathal is in the Clubhouse from Wednesday to Sunday each week for July and August.

Make sure to bring your friends down and spread the word.

The food is second to none and is fantastic value.

We are starting our 14 hole scrambles this Friday evening. All names have to be registered in the clubhouse before 4.30pm on Friday.

The draw will be completed before your arrive at the clubhouse and it will be a shotgun start at 6.30pm.

Thanks to Rodger Greene and James Brogan for assisting with the organisation of these scrambles.

We would like to see all new members participating as it is a good way of getting to know different members in the club. What a great way to start the weekend.

Open Week starts on the 23rd of July until the 3rd of August which is just around the corner. There are great prizes on offer through the duration of the open week. Make sure to put it in your diary and get your friends down to play the course as it is in fantastic condition at the moment.

Dunfanaghy Ladies:

Lady President’s Day

The Lady President, Julia McGinley, hosted her day at Dunfanaghy Golf Club on Saturday 5th July. She welcomed 51 players – 48 members and 3 visitors – to the course and despite forecasts which predicted rain all day, the ladies enjoyed bright but blustery conditions with only occasional showers in the morning. A pleasant tailwind became a strong headwind which challenged everyone from the 9th, so congratulations to Caitlin Hegarty and Cathleen Boyle who birdied the 9th and 17th respectively to get 2s. Despite the testing conditions, the scoring was high (CSS 36 points) and Alayne Treacher claimed the first prize with 40 points. Lady Captain, Cheryl Chambers, with a better back nine, beat Paula McCallion to 2nd prize with 39 points, while Siobhan Bogues secured the gross with 22 gross points. Caitlin Hegarty was 4th (38 points) and Margaret Witherow was 5th (37 points). Margaret Roarty won the Past Lady President’s prize. The two nines were won with 19 points, the first nine by Janice Doherty and the second by Cathleen Boyle. The Lady President’s daughter, Karen McCormick, not only won the longest drive, but also the Nonqualifiers’ prize (40 points). Amy Chambers was nearest the pin. Gretta Sweeney won the 14 hole competition and Marie Gillespie won the Visitors’ Prize.

With the summer season now in full swing, ladies may wish to note the following events which are taking place at the club. Tracy Spence, a Rules Official at the ILGU, will be at the Club in the evening of Friday 11th July to impart her knowledge and answer questions from members and friends about some of the more common rules of golf. There will be no Ladies’ Competition on Saturday 12th July. This has been replaced by a 4 Ball Better Ball competition (any combination). Good luck to Barbara Eakin and her team who take on Rosapenna in the Maura O’Donnell competition the next day (13th July). In a change to the usual running order in the lead up to Lady Captain’s Day, the Lady Captain’s Shoot Out will be held on Tuesday 15th July. Open Week begins on Thursday 24th July with a Ladies’ Competition and members and visitors are invited to support the two 18 hole competitions (24th and 29th ), one of which is sponsored by the Crumlish family, the other by the Gillespie family. Pauline Hunter has sponsored the 14 hole competition on 26th July.

Juvenile Notes;

Our club Academy is starting this week and it is not too late to enter your children’s names to get great coaching from our resident P.G.A. Coach, Seamus Mc Monagle. Please ring the clubhouse for further details.
