UnknownMinister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs, Joe McHugh T.D., announced today that he has sanctioned a grant of €900,000 for the Higher Education Authority to be allocated to Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge to enable them to continue providing a range of courses through Irish in their three Gaeltacht locations, in Gaoth Dobhair, Carna and An Cheathrú Rua, in the 2014/15 academic year.

Announcing the grant, Minister of State McHugh said this morning: “The Acadamh greatly contributes to the educational opportunities available to the Irish language and Gaeltacht communities and it has a positive influence on the social, economic, cultural and linguistic life of those communities”.

In 2004 the National University of Ireland, Galway established Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge to fulfil the University’s obligation to develop third-level education through the medium of Irish.

NUI Galway has an obligation to the Government under the provisions of section 3 of the University College Galway (Amendment) Act 2006 to develop and provide a third-level programme ‘through the medium of the Irish language’.

“Through the Language Planning and Preservation Diploma that they offer in conjunction with Údarás na Gaeltachta, people from the Gaeltacht are trained to take leadership of the future of language planning in the Gaeltacht. I am pleased to announce this grant” said the Minister of State.
