Donegal athletes excel at National Indoor Championships:
A busy weekend with the priority the National Junior /u 23 indoor champs at Athlone IT.
John Kelly has had a remarkable career to this point and today on the back of heavy training he got out to a winning 17.68m in the shot 5m ahead of his nearest rival and the Lyit student now has Scottish champs very much as his focus, a further study will indicate that this is 1m ahead of where he was at in 2014 at this time.
Arlene Crossan had a pb 5.64m to win the long jump and the talented Loreto student really can go way out to 6m or therabouts if she continues to build relentlessly in this discipline . An indication of her all round ability a silver in 400m 59.02 and first things first nice to see her banging out a 58 low in the coming weeks . Liam Mc Devitt whose local connnection is with Kilcar born in England former professional soccer player now a student at St Marys University College , Twickenham . His debut in Irish competition netted a 51.12 400m u 23 silver but he has a sub 50 a few weeks ago so we look forward to his progress . Blathnaid Patton a bronze 10.82m triple medal but you would like to report a 11m plus return but it will come . Today top 3 reads 11.67,11.60 and Blathnaid 10.82m . Well done to Shannon Mc Laughlin who narrowly failed to Q for 400m final .
Congrats to Mountcharles native Karl Griffin competing with Ucd a 800m u 23 victory .
We reported a 4.35m pole vault clearance by Tori Pena in U S and Teresa Mc Gloin in the Raheny 5 mile 7th while refreshing to note a number of our young athletes in UUJ jumps meet important in view of the Ulster 12–19 champs in Magherafelt next weekend . A 5.67 long jump added to by a 1.65 high by Sommer Lecky but big shout out to coaches Niall and Paul Wilkinson for undertaking this competition with their athletes .
