Sinn Fein want to meet with the foreman of Irish Water in Inishowen to get a commitment that they will not install meters where householders do not want them.
Buncrana Sinn Feín Chairperson Ciaran McLaughlin has requested the meeting on behalf of his party.
He says the move is an effort to avoid any future confrontations between Irish Water and residents.
Mr McLaughlin added that they have no issue with households having water meters fitted when they want one.
He said “Up and down this state, Irish Water contractors are installing the meters as fast as they possibly can and mostly moving on when challenged but in some cases there is confrontation between contractors and residents. I believe these scenes can be avoided in the future with common sense being used if the foreman for Irish Water will attend this meeting and agree to this request.”
McLaughlin concluded by said there is anger, frustration and fear in the community ovre the instillation of meters.
“Not one person that we know of wants a meter installed and they are actually dreading the day Irish Water meter installers arrive in their estates but the message is clear our resistance will not weaken and they will not grind us down.
“If any household does not wish to have a meter installed then these Irish Water contractors should respect these wishes and move on. Right 2 Water are holding a protest this Saturday in Letterkenny and I would urge everyone to make their voice heard.”
