Donegal manager Rory Gallagher is expected to make cuts from the squad he used during the Dr McKenna Cup competition as he welcomes back the majority of his squad for this weekend’s clash with Derry.
Donegal begin their Allianz National League campaign this Saturday at Mac Cumhaill Park against Derry.
Gallagher thus far has used the Dr McKenna Cup competition to give new players an opportunity to impress at inter-county level.
Gallagher has handed several players their debuts at inter-county level and also given fringe players under Jim McGuinness more game time as an opportunity to stake a claim for a regular starting berth.
Gallagher handed debuts to Glenswilly duo Joe Gibbons and Eamon Ward, while he also re-called Gary McFadden who left the squad under the tenure of McGuinness.
There were debuts for Kilcar duo Ciaran McGinley and Eoin McHugh who worked under Gallagher at club level.
Ryan Malley (Ardara) Ciaran McCaughey (Bundoran) Conor Parke (St Eunan’s) Willie Gillespie (Naomh Colmcille) Malachy McDermott (Moville) and Sean Hensey (St Eunan’s) also were handed their Donegal debuts by Gallagher in this year’s competition.
It is not yet known out of those given opportunities will remain part of the panel for the rest of the 2015 campaign.
Gallagher fielded experimental sides during the course of the competition and while he re-integrated Martin McElhinney, Christy Toye, Frank McGlynn and Paul Durcan back into the team the majority of the squad used last year seen very little game time.
Neil Gallagher, Frank McGlynn and Michael Murphy also featured but with return of Donegal’s senior stars now imminent with Derry’s arrival in Ballybofey on Saturday. Gallagher will be forced to cut players from his squad.
Gallagher’s expected to name his official squad later in the week for both the forthcoming Allianz National League and Ulster Championship campaigns.
For those who can’t make the game on Saturday evening, the game will be screened live on Setanta Sports Ireland, coverage starts from 7pm.
