Donegal County Council and Údarás na Gaeltachta are to financially support the Fanad Lighthouse Company in their goal to become a leading tourism centre.
Minister Joe McHugh McHugh, who was attending the Great Lighthouses of Ireland event in Dun Laoghaire yesterday evening, confirmed the move.
He said “I have received confirmation today that both Donegal County Council and Údarás na Gaeltachta are to financially support the Fanad Lighthouse Company in their goal to become a leading tourism centre.
“Fanad Lighthouse is the Gateway to the Gaeltacht, not only in West Donegal and the Islands, but right down through Connemara and Co Cork. It is the first Gaeltacht point on the Wild Atlantic Way and plays a key role in promoting not just the Irish language, but our history and our culture.
“The Fanad Lighthouse Company has been working extremely hard over the last number of years towards the development at the lighthouse, as well as the promotion of tourism in Fanad and the surrounding areas.
“I am delighted that their persistence has been recognised and I would like to commend the Directors of the company, whom I met with recently, for their professional approach and tireless efforts. I would also like to acknowledge John Friel, Chairman, for his stewardship at the help of the company.
“I would also like to acknowledge the commitment made by Údarás na Gaeltachta, through my own Department, and Donegal County Council, for seeing the opportunity there is in supporting Fanad Lighthouse and the partnership they have built regarding this project. There has been an understanding from the beginning that this is in the interest of all involved and a willingness to drive the project forward and I am grateful to both organisations for working together and making this happen.”Tags:
