Sinn Féin Councillor Gary Doherty has today responded to comments made by Councillor Micheal Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig concerning recent calls for funding to be made available to City of Derry Airport as ‘contrived’ and ‘ill-informed’.
Cllr Doherty said: “Comments made today by Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig in relation to a statement which I made yesterday in which I pledged my support for the Government to allocate funding for a new Derry-Dublin air route are simply contrived and ill-informed.
“Sinn Féin locally has always called for greater support to be given to Donegal Airport, Carrickfinn and to suggest that my support for City of Derry Airport in any way undermines or negates that is simply disingenuous.
“In fact, my party colleague Deputy Pearse Doherty is on record as having previously raised the subvention of air services at Carrickfinn with the Minister in the Dáil and has long supported the continuation of the vital service at Donegal Airport.
“The fact is that if authorities at City of Derry Airport have made a request for Government funding to provide additional services from Derry airport which also widely serves people from this county, particularly those living in the Finn Valley and Inishowen regions, then why wouldn’t I support it?
“In fact I find his remarks extremely partitionist, and now that this mind set has been exposed I wouldn’t be surprised if Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig would also want the Irish Government to withdraw support for the A5 road project or indeed for North West Cancer Services which it’s planned will be located at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry either – projects which Sinn Féin have always supported.
“Of course, I’m not surprised that Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig has chosen to interpret my statement yesterday in such a negative way however it does show his complete lack of understanding on this issue.”
