Dunfanaghy Captains’ Drive In 2016

The Dunfanaghy Golf Club Captains’ Drive In took place last Saturday 2nd January 2016 on a day that started not so good weather wise but finished as a super day for golf with no wind and abundant sunshine.
While some parkland courses are still suffering the effects of the persistent rain we at Dunfanaghy have the advantage of being a Links sand based course which drains very quickly and well. The greens at the moment are second to none and they are receptive and true. A real pleasure to play on. With the rough very low at present due to the winter growth the course is playing at its most generous.
Captain Denis Martin and Lady Captain Mary Lafferty took their first drives of the season to start off the Captains Scramble. Both drives landed just short of the green. With their other team members, President Keith Lapsley and Lady President Margaret Witherow, they managed to secure 3rd prize in the scramble.
The team of Andy Murray, Gillian Lapsley and Frank Crumlish took the 2nd prize.
The winning team of Jill McCorkell, Joe Toner, Dominic Bogues and James Thomas Sweeney took top honours with a fantastic score of 54 net. This is more like a score from open week rather than a mid-winter score. In his acceptance speech, Joe Toner complimented 10 year old James for his excellent play and his contribution to the team. James is one of a number of very promising juniors making great progress in the club.
All competitors were treated to refreshments before the round and a tasty meal afterwards.
This was an exceptional day for golf with the course in really superb condition thanks to the hard work of Paul McGinley and his staff. Thanks must also go to Sarah and her staff for looking after everyone so well in the clubhouse.
On New Year’s eve there was a dinner dance in the clubhouse again with Sarah ensuring all was presented perfectly. The band (known as – One For The Road) were excellent and catered for every taste in music as was evident in the full dance floor. A great evening enjoyed by all present.

Junior Golf

There was a terrific display of new golf clubs at our first competition for juniors on Saturday the 9th January. Santa seems to have made a number of successful deliveries despite the flooding and windy conditions.

In the competition, Max Roarty was narrowly beaten by an in form Michael Dolan who won by one shot.

Junior competitions will continue every Saturday morning at the usual time of 8.30am. All welcome including beginners and newcomers.

Function Room for Private parties:
We have hosted a number of private functions in the clubhouse recently and these have proved to be a great success. If you, or someone you know, is organising a private function please be aware that the clubhouse is available free of charge, with exclusive use for the occasion. So far, the feedback that we have been getting is that the golf club is the ideal venue for parties of up to one hundred people. Please make contact with Sarah if you are interested in holding a function at the clubhouse (074 91 36335)
