GAA: A late, late goal from Hugh ‘The Yank’ Boyle in the last minute of normal time rescued Donegal against in Mayo in the North-West Cup Final this afternoon in Strandhill, Co. Sligo.
Boyle’s decisive strike in the final minute of normal time capped a superb comeback for Donegal which sent the game into extra-time.
However, despite the additional period of play – neither side could be separated at the end and both sides will have to do it all over again.
Donegal will be delighted considering they had a severely depleted squad this afternoon.
Several of their key players were involved with the Donegal senior side, while their Kilcar contingent where involved in Ulster U21 action.
However, Bonner will be delighted with how his charges applied themselves against a top side in Mayo.
The game, in truth was a cagey affair and it was a low-scoring game played in dreadful conditions.
Mayo led at half-time on a score-line of 1-03 to 0-04 with the goal coming from Barry Duffy.
Mayo extended their lead in the second-half, but Donegal refused to give up and crawled back a four-point deficit as the game ticked towards the final whistle.
Jack O’Brien turned over possession and played in his Naomh Muire teammate Hugh ‘The Yank’ Boyle who cheekily lobbed the keeper to send the game into extra-time.
Donegal led by two points in ET, but Mayo pegged them back to leave the game all level at the death for a second time.
Mayo wanted to play more additional time, but Donegal refused so more than likely the game will be replayed.
