TWO Irish language secondary schools have topped a schools league table – with one of them deemed the most improved in the country.
Pobalscoil Ghaoth Dobhair and Coláiste Ailigh Letterkenny saw every one of last year’s Leaving Cert students going on to third level colleges, a survey in the Sunday Independent found.
Maghene College in Bundoran was the only other secondary to reach 100 per cent of pupils going to third level in 2015.
The Gaoth Dobhair school has put its success down to a unique relationship between teachers, pupils and parents.
The Sunday Independent described the school’s recent results as ‘remarkable’
School leavers going on to third level in 2009 (68%), 2010 (77%) and 2011 (53%).
But in 2012 it was 100%, 2013 a slight dip to 95% and for the past two years there have been two more 100% achievements.
“It’s the atmosphere which we have here now,” said principal Séamus O Briain.
“Pupils and teachers work with each other, there’s good craic and a relaxed atmosphere and the pupils and teachers have bought into that,” he says.
“With that comes responsibilities and everyone just gets it.”
