CRIME ALERT: Gardaí have issued a warning in relation to a phone scam currently in operation across Donegal.

A number of Donegal residents have been contacted and scammed by the con-artists – those unsuspectingly caught out have informed Gardaí of their situation.

Gardaí have now issued a warning to phone users to be vigilant and to answer a call from the +247 number which is supposedly from Ascension Island.

The elaborate scam has already ripped off hundreds of people all over Ireland.

The scammers are ringing people, who once they answer the phone – hear distressed screaming and shouting in the background, then the phone suddenly goes dead.

If the number is called back it can drain the victim’s phone of top-up credit or add a large fee to the phone bill.

Gardaí have urged people not to answer any call that starts with the digits +247 and if it is answered in error, to hang-up immediately.

It’s the latest in a long-line of elaborate phone scams that caught people out in recent months.

Gardaí are hopeful of tracking those responsible for the scams – but have urged people to remain vigilant.
