FEATURES: Donegal slimmer’s have got 2016 of to the most amazing start by shedding an outstanding 12,988 lbs in weight, that’s 927 stone 10lb!!

This January, Slimming World groups across Donegal were bursting at the seams, we couldn’t have prepared ourselves for the number of new members we seen come through the doors to get the help they needed to lose weight.

So what is it that has so many members turning to Slimming World?!

Anne Marie McGee who runs the groups in Newtowncunningham and Buncrana told Donegal Daily,  “We have the best eating plan about, with Slimming Worlds Food Optimising Plan there is no hunger and no guilt.

“We recognise that members don’t want another “diet”, they don’t want to feel like they can’t have the things they want, and with food optimising there is nothing you can’t have.

“Our plan works on the basis of free foods, foods which are satisfying and filling not a silly fad.

“Members can fill up on fruit and vegetables like you would accept but also enjoy unlimited amounts of potatoes, pasta, rice, meat, fish, eggs and so much more.

“There is never any reason to be hungry and if you fancy some chocolate, a glass of wine or whatever it is that takes your fancy then that is ok, its all about planning and making better choices but there really is nothing you can’t have while food optimising.”

“Our plan is geared towards a normal life, making healthier choices, eating the same as the rest of the family, enjoying family and social occasions and all while slimming down.

“We offer membership to Men and women, and have extra support systems in place for diabetics, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and 11-15 year olds.”

A survey carried out in 2015 by Health Ireland showed the 37% of the population is overweight with a further 23% falling into the obese category.

“This is really worrying as your weight can take over every aspect of your life, from your health and happiness to your work and relationships.

“It’s something we know all about in our Slimming World groups as, meeting every week to share our ups and downs, our motivations and our practical tips and ideas for healthy living.

“We help each other through our most difficult times, build our confidence together and celebrate our successes together.

“Having that support from people who truly understand what you’re going through gives you the strength to put yourself in control. And when you feel in control, you have the confidence to make long lasting changes.”

Slimming groups are often mainly associated with women, however in 2015 and so far in 2016 Slimming World groups in Donegal have seen a high increase in the number of men joining us and if not already there then well on their way to target.

Everyone of us walk in the door that first night for the same reason and gender really doesn’t come into it.

The only thing we care about is helping people to lose the weight that they are unhappy with and set them on the path to begin living a longer, healthier and happier life.

Members can have 7 lb or 27 stone to lose, they are all there for the same reason.

If your new years resolutions was to lose weight and it hasn’t gone to plan, don’t worry, with Slimming World that dream can still become a reality, and you don’t have to go hungry or deprive yourself of your favourite foods either.

It’s about regular support and making small, realistic changes that you can keep up in the long term.

Anne Marie added, “We would love anyone who’d like to find out more to come join us in one of our groups to find out more about how we work.

“By attending a group there is no obligation to join, so apart from the weight, what have you got to lose? Give yourself the gift of a healthier and happy future, you really will thank yourself.”
