Members of the general public in Donegal are being invited to help form a ‘Giant Human Shamrock’ in an attempt to set a new world record.
Organisers are hoping to raise funds and awareness for three Donegal charities.
The event will be staged at the Letterkenny Institute of Technology on Saturday March 12th and starts at 2pm.
Three years ago, students from Blackrock College and Willow Park in Dublin formed the world’s largest human shamrock with 850 participants – setting a new Guinness World Record.
Now, a Letterkenny based committee is aiming to help break that record with ambitions of attracting over 1,500 people to take part.
Paddy Delap told Donegal Daily, “We are going all out to set a new record here in Donegal but to do that we’ll need the support of the entire community.
“We are asking sporting clubs to take part as well as schools and any other organisations. Every individual who comes along on the day can play their part in helping to break the record,” added the well-known local fundraiser.
The three charities who will ultimately benefit from the event include ‘Let’s Get Talking Donegal, a community based counselling service offered at the Donegal Women’s Centre and at outreach centres, providing support for men and women over the age of 17;
The Donegal Youth Service, a county wide organisation supporting young people aged between 5-25 to engage in activities and personal development programmes.
And the Letterkenny Youth Club which offers support to school-going children while participating in group events and forming positive peer friendships.
All of the money raised as a result of the human shamrock initiative will be divided between the three charities.
Local businesses and other organisations have been invited to lend their backing to the event on March 12th.
“Where possible, people can dress up in green for the occasion to give it a real shamrock feel but what’s more important is that the numbers turn out on the day,” said committee member, Mary Maguire.
“We want as many as possible from all over the county to come along and help break the existing record.”
The event is being organised under the banner of ‘Let’s Unite for Mental Health’ and there’ll be music and face-painting on the day to add to the family friendly initiative.
