Finn Harps midfielder Gareth Harkin has expressed his delight and euphoria upon hearing he was clear to play in Friday’s crunch North-West derby with Derry City.
Harkin and teammates Michael Funston and Kevin McHugh thought they would miss the league opener due to a suspension being carried over from last season.
Players who accumulated five yellow cards by the end of last season – would automatically miss the start of the following season.
So Harps, were planning without the services of their experienced trio ahead of the big derby clash.
However, the FAI have now changed that rule, and Harps officials received an e-mail from the FAI on Wednesday saying they were now clear to play.
Harkin told Donegal Daily, “It was difficult this week, because you know you’re not going to be involved in any capacity, and as player it’s a game you’re just desperate to play in.
“It’s a derby clash with Derry, we’re at home, and there’s going to be a huge crowd at Finn Park – there’s not many bigger games.
“So it was obviously very disappointing to be missing the match over something as trivial as a yellow card from last season – but I had accepted it.
“But then the club got an e-mail on Wednesday from the FAI to say myself, Kevin and Mickey were cleared to play.
“When Ollie told me I just couldn’t believe it, I was absolutely buzzing.”
Harkin was previously on the books of Derry City during Stephen Kenny’s first spell at the club.
That period was one of Derry’s most successful periods ever – with the club embarking on a famous UEFA Cup run in which they played Paris Saint-Germain.
It was difficult for Harkin to forge his way into the squad and he left for Irish League side Coleraine.
Now with the suspension lifted, he’s relishing the challenge of facing his old club this Friday night at Finn Park.
Harkin said, “Derry City are a full-time side, so we’re aware of how difficult Friday night is going to be.
“They’ve got some quality players and they’re all experienced Premier Division players, but we know we’re a good side and we won’t make it easy for them.
“I can’t wait for the game, and everybody in the squad is the same, the fans are excited and there’s a great buzz around, hopefully it’ll be a good night for us.”
