A man is to appear in court following a crash in which a Garda was injured and a Garda car destroyed following a high-speed pursuit.

The man was rushed to hospital after his Fiat Punto car ploughed into a Garda car between Ballybofey and Donegal Town in the early hours of Friday morning.

It followed a pursuit with another Garda car.

The crash happened as Gardai attempted to deploy a stinger device in a bid to stop a car which was allegedly traveling at a high speed through an area known are McCrory’s Brae.

One Garda had exited a patrol car and another was still in the car when the incident occurred.

The crash resulted in a Garda, named locally as Lifford-based Garda Evan Joyce, also being admitted to Letterkenny University Hospital.

The pursuing Garda car also had a lucky escape after it came within inches of striking the Fiat Punto which smashed into the parked patrol car.

The driver of the Fiat Punto was released from hospital this afternoon having suffered a back injury but was then arrested.

He was taken to Letterkenny Garda station where he was later released on station bail.

The man, who is from Derry, has been ordered to appear at Letterkenny District Court on April 18th next.

Garda Evan Joyce has also since been released from hospital.

A file on the case is being prepared and will be sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
