Mayor of Derry Elisha McCallion to open book of condolence later today for five people who died in Buncrana drowning tragedy last night

THE Mayor of Derry City Cllr Elisha McCallion is to open a Book of Condolence following the tragic incident in Buncrana that claimed the lives of five people.

The Sinn Fein councillor also praised the emergency services in Donegal who attended the harrowing scene in a desperate attempt to save the five people – a man, a woman and three children.

She said: “This is a terrible tragedy that has affected the entire community in Derry and Donegal and left all of us numb.

“Who would have thought that a family day out could have ended so tragically, it is beyond belief and I can’t put into words how sorry I am for the family and those affected by this dreadful accident.

“As Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, I will be opening a Book of Condolence in the coming days in Derry so that the local community can express their sympathies and show their support for the wider community and family circle.

“This is a heart wrenching story that really captures the heart of every person and it’s important that we provide a forum for which people can express their condolences.

“I would also like to pay tribute to all the emergency services who attended the scene last night, it could not be easy dealing with such a harrowing incident.

“The thoughts and prayers of the whole community are with those affected by this tragedy and we offer our help and support over the coming days as they try to come to terms with what has happened,” she said.
