COUNCIL PROBE ALLEGED ILLEGAL CAR WASH AMID POLLUTION FEARS

wash-carDONEGAL County Council is investigating an alleged illegal car wash in the centre of Letterkenny.

There are concerns that a number of people may also be living on the premises of the car wash at the Canal Road.

Waste water from the site – next to Letterkenny Community Centre – is being pumped into the public sewerage system.

However the waste water should be filtered; and the waste removed as hazardous waste by specialist contractors.

Sources say this is not happening at the Canal Road site.

“There had been a car wash there previously operated by a local man but it was closed down due to regulations,” said one council insider.

“Unfortunately a new operator is now at the site. Planning permission has not been granted so an investigation has been under way and enforcement action will follow.”

Fire officers in Letterkenny have also been asked to check part of the premises with a number of families living there.

“The whole site is under investigation,” said the source.

“There are major concerns.”
