ONLINE crooks have sent hundreds of emails to Eir customers in Donegal claiming they are owed money – then empty bank accounts of anyone who falls for the con.
Gardaí are warning people not to click on a link sent by the crooks.
The emails come with a subject line reading: “Refund for your recent monthly eir bill is available online @ eir.ie”.
The email is then titled: Refund Notification.
To make the scam look more realistic it comes with a ‘Refund Number’ and goes on to claim customers have been charged twice by mistake in the previous month.
However some of the words used in the rest of the email should alert customers that it is a con.
Part of it reads: “After a proceeding on our payments server controls, we found the following error, your monthly billing balance was paid in twice….
It goes on: “For this purpose, to receive your money back you are requested to visit your the Account Services space and Completing the claim to receive an immediate refund…..”
The email ends: “See you online soon, Richard Moat Chief Executive Officer of Eircom Ltd.”
Gardaí believe the emails are being sent from abroad.
