Dunfanaghy Golf Club Notes:
Niall Carroll Wins Scratch Cup
The highlight of the week was the staging of the McGinley Motors Senior and Intermediate Scratch Cups played over 36 holes on Saturday. The competition attracted some of the best players in the County and beyond. Fortunately the sun shone all day and the course was in magnificent condition. The winner was former junior member of the Club, Niall Carroll, who came in with a tremendous score of 135 (1 under par). It is great to see Niall back playing at the Club and doing so well. 2nd place went to Donal Boyle of Cruit with a score of 137 while the gross score went to another local member, Shane Greer, with a tremendous score of 138.
The Intermediate Scratch Cup was won by Eugene O’Donnell of Letterkenny with a score of 158 with John Gallagher of Ballybofey & Stranorlar in 2nd place on 159.
Wednesday’s Competition was won by Jonny McClintock. Just when he thought his thirteen year old son, Tom, was about to get his handicap down below his father’s, Jonny came in with 46 pts on Wednesday to win the Wednesday Open Competition by three shots. Jonny’s handicap has now come down from 19 to 15 within the past two weeks and he is hoping to be in single figures before June!
Well done also to Eamonn McGrath who won the Sunday Club Competition with 37 pts.
Junior Golf:
While there was no Junior Competition this Saturday on account of the Scratch Cup, there was plenty of excitement during the week with the home and away legs of the Fred Daly Under 18’s Competition against Letterkenny. On Tuesday, our boys lost narrowly in the away leg with Conor Hanna giving the performance of the day by winning on the 18th. In the return leg our very young team put on a superb performance. The team was made of Tom McClintock aged 13, Luke Kelly aged 12, Conor Hanna aged 12, Rory Kelly aged 11 and James Sweeney aged 10 (Dean McColgan and Kyle McGarvey played in the away leg). All of the boys performed brilliantly. The shot of the day went to Rory Kelly who ripped a massive drive down the first hole in front of a huge audience. The opposition were much older and more experienced but our boys were in no way intimidated. The performance of the day went to the youngest member of the team, James Sweeney, who beat his 10 handicap opponent in a very tight battle. The pair were all square after 16 but James had a superb par on 17 to go one up and managed to close it out on the last hole. Well done to all the boys. The future certainly looks bright.

Social media is an excellent way of keeping up with the latest offerings at the Vardon Lounge and we invite one and all to come down and enjoy the warm and friendly atmosphere and the beautiful food which our chef, Paddy is providing.
Function Room for Private Parties:
We have hosted a number of private functions in the clubhouse recently and these have proved to be a great success. If you, or someone you know, is organising a private function please be aware that the clubhouse is available free of charge, with exclusive use for the occasion. So far, the feedback that we have been getting is that the golf club is the ideal venue for parties of up to one hundred people. Please make contact with Sarah if you are interested in holding a function at the clubhouse (074 91 36335)
