Eany Celtic U14’s were crowned champions of the South Donegal Schoolboy’s U14 League at Eany Park on Saturday after defeating a resilient Copany Rovers side.
Eany attacked from the off but a well organised Copany defence made it difficult for Eany to make the breakthrough.
On the fifteenth minute a superb point blank save by the Copany keeper Daniel Brogan from a Josh Maxwell header kept the scores level.
Eany’s endeavours were finally rewarded in the twentieth minute after some patient build up play from the midfield resulted in a Conor Campbell corner and Jacob Napierski rose above the Copany defence to head the home side into the lead.
Within a minute of the restart Eany had bagged their second when Conor Campbell slotted home from just inside the eighteen yard box.
It looked like a landslide could be on the cards but Copany had other ideas. After a swift passing movement down the left hand side involving Gary Given, Fergal O’Connor was felled by Eany’s Dermot McGuckin just outside the 18 yard box. Lee Moffat stepped up to take the resulting free kick and will consider himself unlucky to have seen it rise inches above the Eany crossbar.
Eany continued to press but Copany closed them down quickly and made it difficult for the Eany frontmen to carve out any clear cut chances.
It was the forty fifth minute before Eany would find the net again when a Jacob Napierski shot from outside the box somehow found its way through the Copany defence and past the unsighted Copany keeper.
Copany pushed on and began to create one or two chances but an Eany defence that has only conceded four goals in thirteen league games weren’t going to give up goals easily.
In the fifty ninth minute it was Eany that struck again when Captain Kyle Campbell found himself on the end of a cross from Conor Campbell and coolly slotted the ball into the bottom corner to put the game and the destination of the league title beyond doubt.
League Chairman, Ian Curristan presented Eany with the league trophy and congratulated both teams on what was a very entertaining game of football.
