Danger signs have been erected on the Bad Eddie shipwreck.

Danger signs have been erected on the Bad Eddie shipwreck.

A shipwreck made famous in a video featuring U2 singer Bono has been declared a danger and could be removed from a Co Donegal beach.

Bád Eddie, or Eddie’s Boat, – is an old fishing vessel which has been on the scenic Magheraclogher Beach in Bunbeg since the 1970s.

It featured in the haunting Bono and Clannad song ‘In A Lifetime’ in 1985 and has become the backdrop for newly-married couples and thousands of tourists each year.

But now Donegal County Council has erected ‘Attention Dangerous Structure’ signs on the boat warning people that it is a dangerous structure.

The signs have been erected inside the wreck so as to still allow tourists take pictures alongside the shipwreck.

Local county councillor Micheal Mac Giolla Easbuig, whose family owned the boat, said there must be discussion on the future of the iconic shipwreck.

“I’m not an expert on boats but it is obviously eroding before our very eyes.

“What I am asking for is conversion and discussion on the future of this iconic structure in the local community.

“I am glad to see that there have been signs erected warning of the Health and safety dangers of the structure of the boat.

“I welcome the discussion that is ongoing on the future of Bád Eddie and I’m glad others have raised the issue as well but we need to be more pro active on the issue and not just pay lip service to it,” he said.
