Minor Boys

Red Hughs: 5-15 Milford: 2-17

Red Hugh’s minor team played away to Milford in the first round of the championship on Friday 8th of July.

Milford were last years winners of both the minor league and championship and this game was expected to be a run out for the host team.

Unfortunately for Milford the Red Hugh’s team had an alternative plan. In a high tempo high scoring game, Red Hughs shocked the much fancied Milford side with a well deserved victory.

It was an excellent team performance, and hard to single out any one individual performance, but Odhran Doherty would have to get a special mention with a personal tally of 1-11, with 1-08 of that coming from play.

The Red Hughs team hit the ground running from the start and it was 10 minutes into the game before the Milford team realised they had a game on their hands. Milford went in at half time 1 point ahead, but an excellent second half performance saw this Red Hugh’s close out the game with a confident, determined, team performance. Ryan Wright had an excellent game in nets with a number of game changing saves and his kick outs were a major factor in the team’s success.

Ryan Gallen, Josh Cronolly and Jason Callaghan were solid in the full back line, while Darragh Gallagher, Tomas Doherty and James Gallagher dominating the Half back mid-field area with the help of Mild fielders Odhran Doherty and a massive work rate from Jason Woods. Ryan Dullaghan (2-01), David Gallen (0-02) and Aiden Gallen combined well in the half forward line and continually posed a threat.

Stephen Carlin and Tim Callaghan (2-0) injected real pace into the full forward line and picked up all the breaks from the excellent hard working full forward Cormac McMenamin (0-1), who either caught and laid of to the incoming half forward mid field players or broke to the two wing forwards.James Callaghan was substituted for Stephen Carlin. Conor Gallagher was unfit to play due to injury but provided much need encouragement to his team mates throughout the game.

Excellent team performance well deserved victory.
