POLITICS: A Donegal County Councillor has said the decision not to address the urgent need for funding for the Bonagee Link Road – in order to alleviate traffic issues is totally unacceptable.
Mayor of the Municipal District of Letterkenny, James Pat McDaid proposed that councillors seek a meeting with the Minister for Transport immediately to address serious concerns over the road.
McDaid said that the fact the Department had no plans whatsoever to address the Bonagee Link Road until after 2021, was totally unacceptable.
McDaid addressed the meeting by saying, “The traffic jam last week only reiterated further the urgent need to address the traffic issues here in Letterkenny.
“Traffic congestion in the town is a serious, serious issue, and it’s only worse it’s going to get.
“Pramerica are relocating to a new building, and that will create additional traffic problems on that part of the town.
“We need to have the correct infrastructure in place in order to provide the opportunity for growth and development.
“Letterkenny is the economic hub of Donegal, and we need to put the Bonagee Link Road in place now.
“The decision not to address the road until after 2021, is just totally and utterly unacceptable.
“It should be on the top of our priority list, and I think we need to seek a meeting with the Minister for Transport, in order to get this road fast-tracked.
The councillors all agreed, the situation needed addressing – although some questioned where the bridge should be placed.
Councillor Liam Blaney said, “I’ve been inundated with calls from people regarding this issue, and they raised concerns over where the bridge has been proposed to be placed.
“Now I’m not trying to jeopardise this project in any shape or form, we need it badly, but I’d hate to see us develop it, only to realise in a few years time, that it should have been put in a different place.
“Because we’ll have no hope of getting another one in our lifetime, so it;s imperative it’s done properly.”
James Pat McDaid and the other councillors agreed, and decided that a workshop be organised for the next meeting of the council – along with engineers to examine the project further.
