Deputy Pearse Doherty will tonight address a gathering of Sinn Féin activists and party members as part of a series of formal meetings taking place across the island as the party sets out its vision for its future.
Speaking ahead of tonight’s meeting which will be held at 7.30pm in the Station House Hotel in Letterkenny, Deputy Doherty said he was absolutely delighted to have been asked to be the main speaker for tonight’s Sinn Féin Planning meeting here in Donegal where the party locally will come together to discuss the future of the organisation and to set out our vision for the future direction of Sinn Féin.
“Tonight’s meeting follows on from last Saturday’s successful meeting in Dublin, which was the first of 44 such meetings organised by the party, where Sinn Féin representatives and members gathered to have their say as the party maps out its plan for the organisation going forward.
“Almost ten years ago, in the aftermath of the 2007 elections, the party held meetings locally and nationally to agree our national strategic objectives and set out a ten-year plan for the party politically, electorally and organisationally,” he said.
The party reviewed its structures and put in place a two-election strategy, north and south and contested the Presidential election for the first time.
“We opened up membership and have more than doubled the size of the party and we were involved in a series of negotiations to advance the peace process.
“Tonight’s Comhairle Ceantair meeting in Letterkenny will give the membership here in Donegal the opportunity to evaluate the progress which Sinn Féin has made over the last decade and to agree our strategic objectives and work plans for the next ten years.
“This is a truly important meeting and I have no doubt that it will mark yet another significant milestone in the party’s advance towards a fairer, more equal and united Ireland.”
