Bishop Edward Daly is being laid to rest today at Saint Eugene’s Cathedral in Derry after suffering from a short illness.

In a message, Pope Francis extended his deepest condolences, saying that Bishop Daly had dedicated his life to the cause of peace and justice.

Almost thirty priests are gathered around the alter as the requiem mass takes place, and attendees include President Michael D. Higgins, John Hume, and Deputy Martin Mc Guinness.

When news of Daly’s passing spread, many politicians paid their respects, including Sinn Féin TD Pádraig MacLochlainn and Pat The Cope Gallagher.

Bishop Daly is best known for an immense act of courage that seen him waving a blood-stained handkerchief while rushing to tend to wounded teenager Jackie Duddy (17) during Bloody Sunday in 1972.

Bishop Daly anointed Jackie and gave him his Last Rites.

May Bishop Daly Rest in Peace.
