“Murphy’s injury looked serious, and his knee is badly swollen” – Declan Bonner

Former Donegal manager Declan Bonner has said the injury sustained by Michael Murphy looked serious, and confirmed that his knee is badly swollen as a result of the injury.

Bonner was on the side-line last night in his capacity as a coach for St Michael’s when the injury occurred to the Donegal captain in an All-County league clash between St Michael’s and Glenswilly.

The 1992 All-Ireland winner said that it seemed an innocuous incident at first, but that it became quickly apparent he had suffered a nasty injury.

Bonner was speaking this afternoon on Highland Radio, where he was commentating on Donegal’s All-Ireland MFC semi-final with Galway at Croke Park.

Bonner said, “I was at the match last night, because I’m involved with St Michael’s, and the incident looked fairly innocuous initially.

“There was a very heavy shower just before half-time, and conditions were difficult, Michael went down and he seemed to be in a lot of pain.

“I touched base with him today, and he said it’s very swollen, he has to wait for the swelling to go down before he can get a scan on it.

“It looks like he will be out for quite a while, it’s a huge blow for Glenswilly ahead of their resumption of the Donegal SFC, but hopefully he hasn’t done his ACL.

“He’s going to be out for a while, but we wish him well, it didn’t look good, but here’s hoping it’s nothing too serious.

“He’s in Croke Park today, he’s a great supporter of underage football, and it’s brilliant to see him down here supporting our minor side.”
