A Donegal GAA club has paid a moving tribute to the young mother who died in the Kerrykeel pier tragedy.

The body of Fiona Doherty (nee Gallagher) from Letterkenny was recovered from the water by rescue services on Saturday afternoon after her car left the pier.

The 36 year old mum-of-three was married to Letterkenny Gaels GAA player Ciaran Doherty, who is also a physio to the senior football team.

In a statement issued today, Letterkenny Gaels GAA said club members had been left shocked by Fiona’s death.

Club secretary Jim McGlynn said it was “with great sadness that I write this message to convey news of the tragic passing of our esteemed club member, Fiona Doherty”.

He said Ms Doherty had “contributed in so many ways” to the club.

“Fiona gave generously of her time and I found her bubbly enthusiasm both enjoyable and inspiring in everything we all conspired to do for our club,” he said.

Mr McGlynn said he had spoken with Fr. Brian Quinn, PP and has since conveyed messages of sympathy and offers of assistance and support, especially over the coming days, with Ciaran, his father, Patrick, Fiona’s parents and other family members.

Sincere condolences is extended to the Gallagher and Doherty family at this difficult time for all.
