Dunfanaghy Golf Club Notes

Junior Golf

Congratulations to our under 16s Fourball Team who have advanced to the county final after a nail biting second leg match against Ballyliffin. The boys held a 2-1 lead going into the away leg played on Sunday and needed something special to get through to the final. The first pair out were Conor Hanna and Luke Kelly. They were up against it playing against two very low handicap opponents and after nine holes found themselves four down. However, with some very consistent golf from Conor and some magnificent putting from Luke, they clawed their way back and eventually won their match on the 18th. The next pair out were James Sweeney and Tom McClintock. They also faced two opponents with lower handicaps but with typical grit and determination, they recovered from a three hole deficit, winning their match on the 17th. James and Tom are yet to be beaten in this competition. The final pair out were rookies Michael Dolan and Rory Kelly. Both boys showed great courage and fortitude and did absolutely everything that was asked of them. The two leg final will be played next Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th against Letterkenny. The home leg will be played on Saturday with tee off at 1:30 approx. Please come along to support our boys. This is the first county final that any male team in the Club has qualified for in many years so your support for John Hanna’s team would be most welcome.

Past Captains’ Competition 2016

The Past Captains of Dunfanaghy Golf Club gathered together again for their Annual Past Captains’ Competition on Saturday past. The weather was extremely pleasant as was the company and there was chat of how things had changed ‘since their day’. The club has lasted over 100 years so somebody has done something right along the way.The changes to the course and the clubhouse are evident to all and it is a credit to the current and past committees who managed these changes. With the weather so good the scoring was also excellent. The steady play of Michael Kelly was hard to match with no double bogeys in his round and a string of pars to finish with a steady score of 40 points.
Nearest to Michael was Neil McGinley who pipped Nigel Doherty on BOT to second place with 38 points. Nigel took 3rd place also on 38 points.
Gerard Dalton won the first nine with 20 points and Paul Burton lifted the second nine with 19 points
After the golf all the Past Captains were treated to a fine meal in the Clubhouse and the chat went on for some time. This is an event which is appreciated by all the Past Captains of the Club and is a chance for them all to get together again.
Our thanks to Past Captain Eugene Magee for organising the event this year.

In our Wednseday Open Singles, Hugh Gallagher from Gweedore, playing off 5, came in with a tremendous score of 43 points, winning by four clear shots from Noel McGlinchey.
In Saturday’s Open Stableford, one of our longest standing members, Knox Wilson took the honours with a great score of 41 points from Paul Smyth in second with 40.
Cathal McMonagle won the monthly medal on Sunday with another very solid performance, coming home with a net 64. Peadar Curran was second with a 66.
