Aogán Ó Fearghail, President of the GAA, launched a special award in memory of RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta broadcaster Séamus Mac Géidigh at the station’s Donegal studio in Doirí Beaga today.
A highly-respected broadcaster, Séamus was manager of the RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta Donegal studio for 12 years until he passed away suddenly in July at the age of 54.
Gradam Shéamuis Mhic Géidigh is an award in his memory, which will be presented to the best footballer in the Donegal Senior Championship every year, as chosen by Séamus’s colleagues in the Donegal press corps where he is so sorely missed.
Launching the award today, GAA President Aogán Ó Fearghail said “The Irish Language, the GAA and Raidió na Gaeltachta were three of the things that Séamus Mac Géidigh held most dear during his lifetime, and that is reflected in this player award, Gradam Shéamuis Mhic Géidigh. I imagine that it will be an award much sought-after, and held in high esteem, as was the man it is named after.”
Edel Ní Chuireáin, Ceannaire of RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta said Séamus Mac Géidigh was a wonderful mentor, always adept at recognising and encouraging young talent, and so this award, Gradam Shéamuis Mhic Géidigh, is a fitting way to honour his memory.
“His outstanding commentary is sadly missing from the airwaves, but he will never be forgotten, and this award will be part of how we remember him in his beloved GAA family in Donegal,” she said.
The award will be presented after the conclusion of the Donegal Senior Championship.
