A fundraiser is to take place in memory of the late Corporal Gavin Carey from Mullingar (27), who drowned after getting into difficulty at Tullan Strand in Bundoran in August.

Gavin, affectionately nicknamed ‘Carebear’, had been training at Finner Camp when tragedy struck. He was recovered following an extensive five day search involving hundreds of soldiers and the RNLI.

His mother Patricia Peyton spoke about the incident on Midlands 103, and highlighted the efforts shown by Bundoran RNLI to find her son.

She said; “Only for them I wouldn’t have found my son to take him home from Bundoran. It’s definitely good to give something back because they are volunteers. They don’t get anything out of it and it’s just an amazing job that they do.”

“They did everything they could to find him, so it’s something I need to do to pay them back.”

A fundraiser has been organised in Danny’s Bar, Mullingar on Friday night at 9pm.
