Anthony Gorman: “We have to believe in ourselves and maybe showcase ourselves more”

Ulster Senior League coach Anthony Gorman says the League representatives have already shown that the USL is at the top of the Intermediate game.

With two wins from two at the 2016 FAI Intermediate Interprovincial Tournament in Cork, the Peter Moran-managed USL side can clinch the Michael Ward Cup yesterday.

A draw with the host side, Munster, will guarantee the silverware for the USL.

“There is some serious talent in the Ulster Senior League and people outside the League really don’t give it enough credit,” Gorman said after last night’s 2-0 win over Connacht.

“The team we have with us is, by and large, a very young one. It’s set up now for what is essentially a Cup final. We’re in a great position and it’s a real testament to the effort that the players have put in since we first got together.”

Davitt Walsh scored twice in yesterday’s 2-0 win, which came after a 3-1 win over Leinster on Friday.

Today at Castletreasure, the home of College Corinthians, the USL will tackle on Munster hoping to win the title for a fourth time. Previously, the USL were Interprovincial winners in 1998, 2013 and 2014.

Gorman said; “We have seen a lot of what Leinster and Munster have with our experiences in the Intermediate Cup. We can be every bit as good as these teams. We have to believe in ourselves and maybe showcase ourselves more. The League and the standard we have in the Ulster Senior League can be a match for anyone.”

“There were a lot of changes made for the game against Connacht, but the young lads who came in did very well.”

“We played some very good football and it was a very comfortable win. We took the game to Connacht.”

Although the USL squad is missing the likes of Malachy McDermott, Garbhan Friel, Gavin Cullen, David Shovlin, Matthew Crossan, Ryan Gildea and Gerry Gill, they stand now on the cusp of a victory.

Gorman continued; “We have a lot of top-class players who aren’t with us for various reasons, but everyone, to a man, who is with us, has contributed something here. It is a real squad effort – but it has to be that way.

“They are more than capable and are certainly able to handle themselves at this level.”
