Murphy goal the difference as Glenswilly win Donegal SFC title

An early first-half goal from Michael Murphy proved to be the crucial score as Glenswilly ousted Kilcar by the minimum in a thrilling Donegal SFC final.

Glenswilly started the brighter and it was their inspirational full-forward Michael Murphy who started dictating the play early on.

Murphy scored an early free and a monster 45 which settled Michael Canning’s side into this affair.

Then that old combination of Neil Gallagher and Murphy did it again to unlock the Kilcar defence.

A long direct ball inside from Gallagher found Murphy who shrugged off two Kilcar defenders to hammer the ball home.

It was the perfect start from Glenswilly, but Kilcar juts like they did in the semi-final against Naomh Conaill responded well.

Martin McHugh’s side got back to within two thanks to points from Paddy McBrearty and Andrew McClean.

However, Glenswilly were always able to keep Kilcar at arms length and added on another few scores to lead by four at the break.

The game was played in horrendously difficult conditions with some very heavy downpours throughout the match.

Kilcar are a team full of quality and showed plenty of fighting spirit in the second-half, as they tried desperately to claw back the deficit.

In truth, Kilcar with rue the amount of wide’s they kicked in the second-half, and those wide’s proved fatal in the end.

Glenswilly have a team of seasoned campaigners and they used all their experience to get over the line, Kilcar got it back to a point when Mark Sweeney pointed, but it wasn’t enough.

Glenswilly hung on to land their third Donegal SFC title in six years.

Commiserations to Kilcar who played their part in a cracking match, but it’s Glenswilly who take the Dr Maguire back to Foxhall again.

Final score: Glenswilly 1-10 Kilcar 0-12
