A review into crowd control and safety at Mac Cumhaill Park is set to be carried out after a number of unsavoury incidents during Sunday’s Donegal SFC final.
A bumper crowd filed through the turnstiles for the eagerly anticipated clash between Kilcar and Glenswilly.
However, when stewards decided to close the main stand at Mac Cumhaill Park 45 minutes before throw-in problems started to arise.
A large number of patrons who didn’t have a seat in the main stand began to congregate at the back of the stand and were unwillingly to go to the uncovered section of the ground.
This confrontation between stewards and spectators led to a number of angry exchanges, and now the Donegal County Board are expected to review the issue of crowd control at the ground.
Edward Molloy, chief steward in MacCumhaill Park for last Sunday’s game, told the Donegal Democrat.
“We were unfortunate with the weather. Sunday was a wet day and if it had been a dry day there would be no problem.
“We also had one of the biggest crowds we’ve had at a county final in a good few years.”
“The stewards were trying to keep the walkway clear and move supporters on.
“In fairness most people obeyed the stewards.
“But you are always going to get a small group that will not co-operate and it was these people that created the hassle.”
