The RNLI and the Rescue 118 helicopter have revealed they will be taking part in exercises on Lough Swilly in the coming weeks.

Several members of the public contacted Donegal Daily last night after witnessing the services taking part in what they thought was a real-life emergency.

However RNLI spokesman Joe Joyce confirmed that last night’s exercise on the Lough close to Buncrana was an exercise.

He also said that there will be other similar exercises in the coming days and weeks.

He said “More than 50% of our call-outs take place in the dark so carrying out exercises and working on our skills is a vital part of our work.

“I appreciate that members of the public may have been concerned but we also want to let them know that similar exercises will be taking place in the coming weeks,” he said.
