Disappointment as OPW refuse grant-aid for Maghery Beach

Deep disappointment has been expressed with news that the OPW has refused an application for funding to reinstate and install new coastal defences for Maghery Beach.

Cllr Marie-Therese Gallagher said the local community in West Donegal is deeply disappointed at the news.

“The Community of Maghery, in conjunction with Donegal County Council, has put a lot of work and effort into this application to reinstate the present defences and install rock armour to protect the village and community centre in Maghery.

“We were all very hopeful that these measures would secure the future of the beach and village.

“This decision however to refuse this application for funding is a major blow to the area and to the district council.

“I am now in the process of arranging a special meeting with all the stakeholders to ensure that other options are considered. It is not an option to leave this village defenceless and it is now more important than ever to find a solution without delay.”
