The Bishop of Raphoe, Dr Philip Boyce, is recovering after surgery.

Mass-goers were told today that Dr Boyce, 76, had undergone surgery to have a pacemaker fitted.

He was due to attend mass at St Eunan’s Cathedral in Letterkenny but parishioners were told he is still recovering after his operation.

Best wishes were relayed to the Bishop during the mass.

Dr Boyce celebrated his Golden Jubilee Mass in April last.

Bishop Boyce was ordained Bishop of Raphoe on October 1, 1995 in St. Eunan’s Cathedral. His previous ministry of three decades was spent in the Carmelite Order in Rome.

On January 25th 2015, Bishop Boyce reached the mandatory age of retirement for a bishop which is 75 years.

In a statement released by the Raphoe Diocese, Bishop Boyce duly submitted his resignation to Pope Francis. The Pope accepted his resignation, but asked him to continue until a new bishop is appointed.
