Women of all ages from all over County Donegal and the North West are invited to join in a collective conversation about women’s lifetime experiences.

This event, called ‘Visible & Invisible Women’ – 100 Years on in Donegal will be held on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2017.

This event is being hosted by the Donegal Women’s Network and Donegal County Museum who are inviting women to come and create a special moment in time, be inspired by the women of the past, and their memory, be bold for change and Speak Up and Speak Out.

The International Women’s Day theme for 2017 is #Beboldforchange.

Judith McCarthy, Curator at the Donegal County Museum is excited about hosting this event on International Women’s Day saying “we are delighted to be working with the Donegal Women’s Network on this special event”.

“It is all about getting women to come along to share their stories on the past, the present and their aspirations for the future. This event has been inspired by the “Mná 1916-Women 1916” exhibition which is currently on view in the County Museum and we have a wonderful line up of speakers planned for the morning session in the Regional Cultural Centre and a more intimate workshop style event planned for the County Museum in the afternoon.”

During the morning session in the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny, Dr Jennifer Redmond, President of the Women’s History Association and Lecturer in Modern Irish History will discuss the migration of women and the reasons why they left Ireland. She will be joined by Cécile Gordon, Archivist at the Military Archives who will share new stories of revolutionary women and local historian, Helen Meehan. Finola Brennan from the NCCWN- Donegal Women’s Network will bring us into the present and will speak to the ‘Invisibility and Visibility’ of women in Donegal today.

The afternoon session will be held in Donegal County Museum at the High Road in Letterkenny where a guided tour of the “Mná 1916-Women 1916” exhibition will be given by its Curator Sinéad McCoole followed by an invitation to join in a series of conversations to help us explore what it means to be ‘Visible & Invisible Women’ today and into the future.

This event has been supported by Donegal County Council, Donegal Change Makers and the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. The event is free but booking is essential.

For booking and further information contact Donegal County Museum, High Road, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal on 074 0124613 or email museum@donegalcoco.ie. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.
