Shane Blaney captained the Republic of Ireland Schools to a dramatic 2-1 win over Wales at Belgrove in Dublin today in the Centenary Shield.

The St Eunan’s College student, who plays for Finn Harps, led the way for the Boys in Green as they began their Centenary Shield campaign with a last-ditch win.

Ireland led through Neil Farrugia’s goal on the stroke of half-time, but Welsh substitute Conor Harwood leveled things up, just two minutes after coming into the action.

Ireland had to wait until injury time to get the winner as Sean McDonald converted from the spot.

Jamie Bell (St Columba’s College, Stranolar) and Connor Gormley (Loreto, Milford) were unused substitutes today.

Ireland are away to Northern Ireland in two weeks’ time.
