Glenties to host the first St Paddy’s Day parade in Ireland – at midnight!

Glenties is to host Ireland’s first St Patrick’s Day Parade this year – at one minute past midnight on March 17th!

The town has enjoyed hugely successful parades in recent years including a world record attempt to have the most amount of people dressed as leprechauns at their parade in 2012.

However, this year organisers found it increasingly difficult to book bands for the parade as many had already committed to other events.

So the committee of the Glenties Community Development Group decided to go under the cover of darkness.

The group approached a number of bands asking if they would take part in their parade at one minute past midnight on March 17th next – and they agreed.

Chairman of the local development committee, Brian Carr said the response to the idea has been terrific.

“We pitched the midnight idea to four bands and they thought it was a fantastic and novel idea to have a parade at that time and that the certainly would love to be part of it.

“More bands have expressed an interest and asked could they come along and partake in the parade, no problem was our reply the more the merrier.

“We plan to turn the town green for the night by lighting up some premises green and turning some lights outside business green.

“We also are hoping that the floats will be illuminated as this would make a great spectacle at night. Also we have lots of LED green lights for the bands to place around some of there instruments.

“So with everything this is going to be a big bright green night in the wee town of Glenties with plenty of music, craic, fun for all and even a late licence,” said chairman Brian Carr.
