Disappointment for LyIT in CFAI Cup final as Houghton steps up to haunt Byrne

There was disappointment for Letterkenny Institute of Technology in this afternoon’s CFAI Umbro Cup final in Limerick.

Letterkenny Institute of Technology 0 IT Carlow 1

A first-half goal by John Morgan gave Carlow the win and it was a tough pill to swallow for LyIT, who had performed so well throughout.

Morgan struck midway through the opening period and it was a well-worked goal by IT Carlow, who came into today’s game chasing a fifth CFAI Umbro Cup title in a row, but they were without Finn Harps man Jonny Bonner.

It was a game that, for long periods, was devoid of very many clear-cut chances.

LyIT had a good chance on 16 minutes when Derry City’s Adrian Delap broke through on the right-hand side, but he was denied by a fine save by IT Carlow goalkeeper Seamus Houghton and Daniel Martin Doherty just failed to get a touch on the rebound.

Glengad man Houghton has been recently signed back to his native Glengad United and he haunted his club manager today – Shane Byrne is also the manager of the LyIT side.

LyIT had the better of the play in the second half as they went in search of an equaliser, but the Port Road students couldn’t force a clear-cut chance in what was a cracking game.

Delap was outstanding for LyIT and was named as the Man of the Match.

Letterkenny Institute of Technology: Mark McElhinney, Caolan McDaid, Oisin Langan, Lee McColgan, Ciaran Kelly, Daire McDaid, Adrian Delap, Brian McVeigh, Paul McVeigh, Daniel Martin Doherty, Simon McGlynn. Subs: Keelin McElwaine for Doherty (69), BJ Banda for C.McDaid (80).
