Visiting restrictions are still in place throughout Letterkenny University Hospital today in an effort to contain and eradicate the Norovirus.
Maximum infection control precautions are in place to prevent the spread of the winter vomiting bug.
The illness has affected three wards in particular, namely Medical 5, Medical 3 and Surgical 2. A hospital spokesperson said that the Norovirus seems to be resolving in the three wards already affected.
However, new patients are presenting to the hospital over the past 24 hours with vomiting and diarrhoea and, while not formally confirmed, they are being treated as suspicious of NV and are being treated accordingly.
Hospital management have expressed their thanks to the general public for their co-operation regarding not visiting. They have stressed that any members of the general public who are experiencing vomiting and/or diarrhoea at home should not visit the hospital. The Norovirus is said to be prevalent in the community at this time.
In exceptional circumstances, an LUH spokesperson said that the next of kin should ring the ward directly to make arrangements. It has been advised that children under 12 should not visit the hospital. Strict hand washing/hand hygiene should be followed at all times in the hospital.
There are currently 24 people awaiting admission to LUH this afternoon, with the latest trolley watch figures revealing that 7 people are waiting on trolleys and 17 are in overflow wards.
