Garda teams spent all day today searching fields in East Donegal for stolen life-saving fire service equipment.

The valuable tools were taken when a gang stole a €400,000 fire brigade from Stranorlar Fire Station in the early hours of Monday morning.

The new Scania fire tender was found just after 8am at a forestry in Killygordan, just a kilometre from the border with Co Tyrone.

The fire brigade was undamaged but vital cutting and other equipment was missing from the vehicle.

Gardai are studying CCTV footage in a bid to identify the gang who stole the fire brigade from the station.

Garda Inspector Goretti Sheridan said they are making progress but are very anxious to find the equipment.

“This is vital equipment which should be available to the fire service within their daily work but it is not.

“We spent today searching in fields for the equipment and we would ask anybody who may know of its whereabouts to contact us.

“We are viewing a lot of CCTV footage as part of our investigation but we would appeal to anybody who may have other footage to come forward,” she said.
