Spot-on Milford defeat Letterkenny Rovers to win John Gorey Curran Cup

MILFORD UNITED CLINCHED the John Gorey Curran Memorial Cup this afternoon following a penalty shootout win over Letterkenny Rovers in Rathmullan.

Milford United 1-1 Letterkenny Rovers

(after extra-time. Milford won 3-0 on penalties)

With a Zach Gorman penalty looking as though it was going to take the Leckview Park side to victory, a last minute equaliser from Darragh Greene of Milford brought extra-time, which failed to yield a goal.

The subsequent shootout turned into something of a nightmare for Anthony Gorman’s Letterkenny, who missed all three of their spot kicks, while Milford scored all theirs to win the trophy.

Josh Pond, the Milford goalkeeper, saved efforts from Shane Doherty and James Tourish, while Milford scored their first two thanks to Jonah Serrinha and Greene.

Then, when Zach Gorman struck the crossbar it was left to Conor Coll to fire home the clinching penalty.

Beforehand, it was a contest of few chances.

In the first half, from a throw-in by Gorman, Rovers’ Doherty drew a save from Pond in the Milford goal.

Greene, at the other end, fizzed a shot across the Letterkenny Rovers’ goal but there were no takers.

Gorman scored a 73rd minute penalty to put his father Anthony’s team in front on 73 minutes when Niall Trearty fouled Cody Brogan.

That looked as though it would be enough to win for Rovers, who had lost the Colin Breslin Cup final at the same venue a week beforehand as they went down 1-0 to Fanad United.

However, in the last minute of the 90 Milford got back to 1-1 when Green shot past Jordan having got onto a pass from Serrinha.

Milford United: Josh Pond; Adam Graham, Niall Trearty, Ryan Flood, Kieran Black, Oisin Doherty; Stephen Bryant, Rory O’Donnell, Jonah Serrinha, Ryan Toye; Darragh Greene. Subs: Conor Coll for Doherty (half-time), Kieran Connor for Bryant (57), Shaun Bryant for Graham (60).
Letterkenny Rovers: Eoghan Jordan; Eoghan Kelly, Shane Doherty, Alan Stephenson, Ruairi Dennehy; Calvin O’Brien, Jerome Angel-Atuahene, Shaun Curran, Brandon Manuei; Zach Gorman; Cody Brogan. Subs: Karol McGinley for O’Brien (66), Brian Diver for Manuei (81), James Tourish and Ryan O’Donnell for Brogan and Dennehy (half-time, extra-time), Ciaran Daffan for Stephenson (108).
