Letterkenny has been named as the largest town in the three Ulster counties, according to new CSO figures.
The population of the town has fallen by 1.9% in the past five years, from 19.588 in 2011 to 19,274 in 2016. Dividing this number by gender shows that there are 9,899 females and 9,375 males in the town.
Letterkenny is overall the 18th most populated town in Ireland. Drogheda in Co. Louth remains country’s largest town.
This latest CSO report of Population Distribution and Movements in the Republic of Ireland also revealed that Donegal Town is the fastest growing in the county. The population here grew by 0.4% to have 2,618 residents last year.
Overall in Co. Donegal, the population has dropped from 161,137 in 2011 to 159,192 in 2016.
This is the second thematic report from Census 2016 to show how the population has changed in the last five years. The topics examined are the geographical distribution of the population, the population density (i.e. the number of people by area) and internal migration (who moved within the state in the year up to April 2016).
The report shows that 1 in 5 Donegal residents are born outside the country. Eight percent of the county’s inhabitants have moved from other counties. Donegal natives are likely to stay at home too, with just13% of people born in Donegal now living outside the county.
